30-min Webinar - Tracking Salt: From Roads to Streams

Winter salt and deicers are common water pollutants. Once extracted from the safety of the earth and connected with water, chlorides persist indefinitely with only one tsp of road salt needed to permanently pollute 5 gallons of freshwater. Salt Awareness Week features experts in hydrology, biogeochemistry, public health, and conservation that will discuss facets of this issue that impacts your community.

Day 2: Tracking Salt from Winter Roads to Summer Streams: Assistant Professor of Physical Hydrogeology at UW-Milwaukee, Charlie Paradis will share his research in hydrogeology with an emphasis on the mobility of road salts and emerging contaminants in groundwater. Dr. Paradis' road salt research is focused on characterizing the mass discharge of chloride from groundwater to surface water during the summer months along the Root River in Racine, Wisconsin.
