21 2007 April Root-Pike WIN Grants

Root-Pike WIN approved 7 grants totaling $38,916.00. They are:

A Conference to Improve Public Policy For Managing Invasive Species in the Great Lakes
$2,245.00 - Communication & Education

A WIN grant will support two conferences at Carthage College in Kenosha that will focus on changing public policy to improve the control of invasive species in the Great Lakes and its tributaries.

Baseline Water Quality Assessment of the Root River
$7,236.00 - Water Resources

As redevelopment occurs along the urban corridor of the Root River, the city would like developers to take steps to improve water quality in the river. A WIN grant will allow the City of Racine Health Department to establish a baseline for future studies of water quality in the river by collecting 25 surface water samples daily and analyzing them for turbidity, temperature and E.coli.

Canoe & Kayak Launch at Linwood Park in Caledonia
$4,435.00 - Recreation and Aquatic Habitat

Caledonia Parks and Recreation will design and install a canoe/kayak launch on the Root River in Linwood Park in Caledonia (Racine County) as a result of a WIN grant. The new launch will increase paddlers' safety as they access the river and reduce streambank erosion.

Education Signs, Root River Environmental Education Community Center
$8,400.00 - Communication & Education

A WIN grant will pay for signage at the new Root River Environmental Education Community Center (REC) located on Sixth Street and the Root River. The REC will teach about urban river ecology and provide recreational opportunities, including kayak and canoe rental. It is a partnership between the City of Racine and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Restoration of the Schurn Prairie in Greenfield
$5,600.00 - Land-Use & Protection

A WIN grant will help the Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewerage District restore eleven acres to deciduous woodland and wet mesic prairie in its newly acquired Schurn Prairie located in the upper Root River watershed. The restoration will reduce sediment and chemical runoff, improve stormwater drainage and increase wildlife habitat.

Site Analysis at the Mary Helgren Johnson Preserve
$6,000.00 - Land-Use & Protection

A WIN grant will pay the Kenosha-Racine Land Trust for the analysis of water, soil and plant samples to determine how well phytoremediation is working along the Root River bank at the Mary Helgren Johnson Preserve, owned by the KRLT. In 2006, working with students at St. Rita's School and UW-Parkside scientists, the bank was cleared and planted with native plants that can remove lead and chromium contamination from the soil.

Streambank Erosion and Sediment Control in Lincoln Park, Racine
$5,000.00 - Water Resources

A WIN grant will help the City of Racine reduce streambank erosion and resulting water turbidity in the Root River. The City plans to re-grade some riverbanks in Lincoln Park and install fiber rolls to prevent undercutting. Invasive plants will be removed and replaced with native plants. The project may also improve fish habitat.
